About Magistra
I moved to Tennessee from Georgia in the 8th grade, and graduated from LaVergne High School in 2004, where I did not take Latin because "it was too hard". I moved to Clarksville to attend college at Austin Peay State University, where I received my Bachelor of Arts in English with double minors in Education and Latin. I went back to APSU for my Master of Arts in Research in Education, which I earned in 2018.
My original intent was to teach English, as inspired by my phenomenal senior AP English teacher. Through my studies at APSU, I became acquainted with Dr. Tim Winters, who recognized my love and aptitude for language and wasted no time recruiting me to the Classical cause. I feel especially lucky to have become part of the community of dedicated Classicists in Clarksville, who truly love and live the subject.
Much of my time outside of the classroom is consumed with my Junior Classical League kids and my bio kids, Scarlett (11), Gabriel (10), and Aziel (6 months). When I do have a free moment, I enjoy reading, writing poetry, being outdoors, music, comic books, video games, kickboxing and generally all things nerd related.
Using my experiences with my children as a compass, I like to give my students choices when it comes to their learning, and to allow them to use their talents to enhance their education. I also get a kick out of showing students how a 'dead' (I prefer the term zombie) language is actually a key to unlocking the world, showing up in words, music, movies, and even politics.
As they say in my hometown: Don't forget to be awesome.
